AT&T Expanding Wireless Coverage in Maine; Investing More Than $4 Million This Year in the State's Wireless Network

Posted on: Monday, 20 August 2007, 15:02 CDT

PORTLAND, Maine, Aug. 20 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- AT&T has announced a planned investment of more than $4 million in the Maine wireless network in 2007. This will bring AT&T's three-year investment in Maine to more than $10 million. This year's planned investment includes the addition of six new cell sites and approximately 140 new radios to nearly 50 cell sites throughout the state. It also includes 15 new hardware cabinets and power amplifiers to increase capacity.

The 2007 enhancements focus primarily on expanding the network's voice capacity and enhancing the EDGE (Enhanced Data for GSM Evolution) data network, which offers faster download speeds for consumers and business users. The expansion also gives the company additional bandwidth to support its growing customer base and growing voice and data usage.

This year, AT&T has already turned on a new cell site in Bangor that improves coverage along Route 15 and the surrounding commercial area.

Five additional cell sites planned for Maine this year will enhance wireless coverage for AT&T customers in a number of areas, including South Berwick, Winthrop, Downtown Bangor, Bangor International Airport and Hampden.

AT&T has delivered dramatic change in Maine -- a direct result of the company's continuing efforts to expand and enhance its network operations and the synergies that come from being part of the world's largest communications company.

"No other wireless network is more reliable in Portland, and we are committed to expanding and enhancing coverage throughout Maine," said Steve Krom, AT&T's vice president and general manager for wireless operations in New England. "Our goal is to ensure that AT&T customers have the very best wireless experience possible -- which includes unmatched coverage and quality of service."

AT&T diligently monitors the quality and coverage of its network. In addition to third-party vendors that assess the company's network performance, AT&T wireless network engineers constantly monitor the network and drive tens of thousands of miles throughout Maine each year to ensure that the network is operating at peak efficiency.
