AT&T Foundation Announces Two Grants Totaling $50,000 for Wilberforce University, University of Dayton

Posted on: Wednesday, 17 November 2004, 12:00 CST

DAYTON, Ohio, Nov. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- The AT&T Foundation announced today it has awarded grants of $25,000 each to Wilberforce University and the University of Dayton.

The grant to Wilberforce will aid Students for Exploring Advanced Technologies (SEAT), a program designed to help Dayton's high school seniors interested in careers in math and science to be better prepared for college.

"We're delighted to contribute to a program that directly addresses a great need: making sure our students are ready for the academic rigors of college, especially in subjects so critical to our business, math and science," said Joseph D'Angelo, director of AT&T Government Solutions' office in Fairborn, Ohio. "We think SEAT can go a long way toward assuring that more of Dayton's students are successful both in college and in their careers."

SEAT is a collaboration between Wilberforce, Dayton Public Schools, the Air Force Research Laboratory at Wright-Patterson AFB and AT&T Government Solutions and is aimed at closing the academic achievement gaps in math and science for Dayton's public school students. Students chosen for the program will be assigned to work with college faculty and Air Force research experts with a goal of boosting their math and science skills.

"The AT&T Foundation is to be congratulated for stepping up with this substantial grant for the SEAT program," said Marshall Mitchell, vice president of Institutional Advancement at Wilberforce University. "We believe this program will help Dayton's students find academic success in college, which will open many doors for them."

The AT&T Foundation grant to the University of Dayton's Electro-Optics Program will advance research into the harmful effects of certain lasers on Air Force aircraft and equipment in the hope of finding ways to mitigate these effects.

"We're delighted to be able to support such important work," said D'Angelo, whose team in Fairborn performs advanced materials research under government contract.

Dr. Joseph Haus, who heads the Electro Optics program said, "We'd like to thank the AT&T Foundation for this generous grant, which will allow us to make great strides in determining how intense, ultrashort laser pulses propagate and their effects on materials."
