Japan Technology Group and the Nara Institute of Science and Technology Jointly Present a Free One-Day Seminar in Medical Science

Posted on: Tuesday, 4 September 2007, 18:02 CDT

Nara Institute of Science and Technology (NAIST) with the help of the organizer, Japanese Technology Group, will present a free one-day seminar to showcase innovations in the field of Medical Sciences. The seminar will be held October 1, 2007, at the Union League of Philadelphia (140 South Broad Street). Registration will begin at 8AM.

Founded in 1991, although its history is very young, NAIST is one of the top 5 research institutions and graduate universities in Japan with specializations in bio, material, and computer sciences. Hitherto a fully-funded national institution, recent governmental deregulations have made it possible for researchers to seek-out alliances with the private sector including those abroad.

Among the economic reforms that have prompted this technological detente is the so-called Japanese version of the Bayh-Dole Act which gave universities the right to patent their discoveries even if they were made using government funding. Another reform that has contributed to the thawing of relations was the 2004 legislation that made "national" universities "independent administrative corporations". From the stand point of the universities, this has meant cutbacks in government funding propelling them to seek revenue elsewhere. From the standpoint of industry, however, the reform presents an opportunity to find innovative core technologies generated by academia for potential development and commercialization.

Taro Yaguchi, president of Japan Technology Group, hopes this seminar will set a precedence for Japanese Universities: "This is the first time in the East Coast that a team of Japanese scientists have actively sought out licensing partners in the U.S. This is an extremely bold move and I am hopeful that this event will encourage other universities to do the same."

There will be eight technologies showcased at the seminar covering such areas as Neuroscience (Head injury, Alzheimer's, Neuropathy), autoimmune diseases and osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid arthritis, Regenerative medicine and Cancer, and Hepatitis and Diabetes Mellitus.
