Sycamore Successfully Demonstrates Dynamic Ethernet Services in Multi-Vendor, Multi-Carrier Interoperability Demonstration
Posted on: Monday, 17 September 2007, 09:00 CDT
Sycamore Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: SCMR), a leader in intelligent bandwidth management solutions for fixed line and mobile network operators worldwide, today announced the Company successfully demonstrated end-to-end provisioning of dynamic switched Ethernet services in the Optical Internetworking Forum's Worldwide Interoperability Demonstration - On-Demand Ethernet Services. The multi-vendor, multi-carrier test event, which has been underway in carrier labs during the past 90 days, culminates this week in a real-time, global network demonstration that will be featured at the European Conference on Optical Communications (ECOC) in Berlin.
As part of the industry-leading demonstration, Sycamore SN 16000 intelligent optical switching systems and standards-based BroadLeaf® networking software underwent extensive control plane interoperability testing at carrier labs on three continents, including China Telecom, France Telecom, and Verizon. In addition, Sycamore's involvement in this global test event featured successful demonstration of dynamic Ethernet service establishment over an ASON/GMPLS-enabled intelligent optical core network through the use of OIF implementation agreements of User-to-Network Interface (UNI) 2.0 and External Network-to-Network Interface (E-NNI).
Demonstration highlights included:
Ethernet Private Line - allowing carriers to leverage existing TDM infrastructure to carry Ethernet
Neighbor Discovery - automating what is currently a manual provisioning process between neighbors
Control Plane Failure Recovery - an important carrier-class reliability feature
Non-Disruptive Bandwidth Modification - optimizes network operation and resources by adapting to bursty data traffic flows
"Ethernet services represent a tremendous opportunity for network operators worldwide as they look to expand their portfolio of competitive service offerings," said Jim Mooney, vice president of product management and marketing at Sycamore. "With the ability to support dynamic provisioning of end-to-end circuit and packet connections, the ASON/GMPLS-powered optical switched network provides an agile, carrier-class foundation for advanced Ethernet transport and other new revenue-generation offerings."
The 2007 OIF Worldwide Interoperability Demonstration - On-Demand Ethernet Services will be showcased this week at ECOC 2007, September 17-19, 2007 in Berlin at the OIF booth, # 17075 in Hall 17.
