Uganda telecom enhances communications services

KAMPALA, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) -- Uganda telecom has signed a financial facility agreement valued 38.5 million US dollars with four financial institutes to enhance its communications services, local press reported on Sunday.

The four institutes are Dfcu Limited, East African Development Bank, East and Southern Trade and Development Bank and Standard Chartered Uganda.

The facility is intended to enable Uganda telecom to enhance access to affordable and reliable communications services by speeding up the rollout of countrywide GSM and CDMA networks.

Uganda telecom managing director Aimable Mpore was quoted as saying, "The data and fixed line network are being upgraded to offer the latest broadband services such as ADSL which will allow customers to enjoy high speed access to the internet, faster downloading of information and video streaming."

Mpore said since its privatization in 2000, Uganda telecom had aggressively restructured and transformed from a single telecom provider to a market leader with a wide range of communications services.

"It is pleasing to note that both domestic and international banks have participated in this transaction that marks a milestone in the company's continuing development and growth," he said. " This is the largest financial transaction in Uganda and has been realized because of the bank's confidence in Uganda telecom's strength and position in the market."
