(Update) Sharp, Sony Ericsson to Jointly Develop FOMA Handsets
Tokyo, Nov. 29 (Jiji Press)--Sharp Corp. said Monday it has agreed with Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications AB on the joint development of mobile phone technologies.
Sharp will cooperate with the joint venture between Sony Corp. and Sweden's Telefon AB LM Ericsson to develop core software for handsets compatible with NTT DoCoMo Inc.'s FOMA third-generation mobile phone service. The two sides also plan to share part of their mobile phone hardware as part of the tie-up, Sharp said.
They will adopt the mobile operating system of Symbian Ltd. of Britain and develop original handsets, company officials said.
The Sharp-Sony Ericsson collaboration adds to an alliance already formed between NEC Corp. and Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. for mobile handset development and another between Fujitsu Ltd. and Mitsubishi Electric Corp. .END
