MEDIA ALERT: iKeepSafe Hosts "Connected &Amp; Protected" Assembly With Boys &Amp; Girls Club to Address Internet Safety

What:

To present Attorney General Cooper with the Internet Keep Safe Award and address concerns about Internet safety at a Kids' Assembly hosted in conjunction with the Boys & Girls Club of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. This event will explore the role the Internet and other technologies play in kids' personal, school and family lives, including: how kids use the Internet; which Web sites kids visit; what kids fear about the Internet; and what kids are sharing on social networking sites.

Event Visuals:

 --  iKeepSafe awarding Attorney General Roy Cooper with the Internet Keep     Safe Award for his efforts promoting Internet safety --  Kids asking questions about Internet safety --  Kids touring the highly visual "Connected & Protected" bus, a tractor-     trailer-sized Internet classroom with stations and games dedicated to     raising awareness of Internet safety --  iKeepSafe costume character mascot, "Faux Paw the Techno Cat,"     interacting with kids

 The Salvation Army International Boys & Girls Club 2850 New Walkertown Road Winston-Salem, NC 27105 

When:

 Wednesday, September 19 4:30 - 5:15 p.m. - Kids' Assembly with Attorney General Roy Cooper 5:15 - 6:00 p.m. - Kids of Boys & Girls Club of Winston-Salem tour the "Connected & Protected Mobile Tour" classroom 

Why:

 --  55% of online teens have profiles online - of these, 79% included     photos of themselves; 66% included photos of friends (Pew) --  56% of teens receive requests for personal information; 12% of tweens     (8-12) (Polly Klaas Foundation, 2006) --  54% frequently have private conversations with online strangers     through instant messaging; 10% of tweens (ibid.) --  32% of teens report being cyberbullied in the last year (Harris     Interactive) --  Victims of online harassment are three times more likely to exhibit     symptoms of major depression (Cyber Psychology and Behavior)
