IMC Networks Introduces Power Over Ethernet Media Converters; New PSE-McBasic Fiber Media Converters Extend Network Distances, Provide Power to Wireless Access Points, IP Security Cameras

November 30, 2004

IMC Networks, a leading manufacturer of optical access solutions for the LAN, MAN and beyond, today introduced a new line of fiber optic media converters supporting the IEEE 802.3af Power over Ethernet standard. The new PSE-McBasic functions as a fiber-to-UTP media converter, as well as a Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE), delivering both data and electric current to Powered Devices (PD) by using the twisted pair data cabling. Deploying PSE-McBasic series media converters is an ideal solution for both installing Powered Devices up to 40 Km from the central site, as well as powering the end-devices at the remote site, such as Wireless Access Points, VoIP phones, and IP security cameras.

“The rugged McBasic series copper to fiber media converters are the benchmark in the industry, supporting all Ethernet speeds, featuring advanced network troubleshooting capabilities, and an internal power supply,” said Michael Dailey, president and chief operating officer of IMC Networks. “Adding the Power over Ethernet functionality to the 100 Mbps McBasic series converters enables our customers to speed up deployment and greatly reduce network installation costs, since the converter now provides both data and power to remote devices,” continued Dailey.

Features and Functionality

Power over Ethernet media converter is available in two configurations: PSE-McBasic for regular LAN use; PSE-XT-McBasic for extended temperature range applications, from -20 degrees Celsius to +65 degrees Celsius. To accommodate a wide range of distances, units support several fiber cabling types, including multi-mode up to 2 Km and single-mode up to 40 Km, as well as single-strand fiber models that transmit full-duplex data over just one strand of fiber, extending distances to 20, 40 or 60 Km. Power over Ethernet media converters are fully compatible with IEEE Fast Ethernet and 802.3af Power over Ethernet standards.

Price and Availability

Available immediately, the PSE-McBasic converters start at $790 for the multi-mode units and at $880 for the single-mode units. The new PSE-McBasic and other IMC Networks solutions are distributed domestically by Graybar, Ingram Micro, Tech Data, and by a network of distributors in over 50 countries.
