Nov. 30--NEW YORK -- Sony Corp. and Toshiba Corp. said Monday they will launch digital consumer appliances with highly advanced semiconductors in 2006.
The microprocessor, called "Cell," is said to have a computing capacity equal to that of supercomputers. It is being jointly developed by the two companies and International Business Machines Corp.
The technology will also be installed in the next-generation version of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.'s PlayStation 2 computer game console, according to Sony.
According to the developers, Cell is a multicore microchip that is capable of conducting several high-speed calculations at the same time. It is optimized for computing-intensive workloads and broadband media applications, including computer entertainment, movies and other forms of digital content, they said.
Sony said it expects to launch home servers for broadband content as well as high-definition television systems powered by Cell in 2006.
Toshiba said it plans to launch a high-definition TV set featuring Cell in the same year.
