JDS Uniphase Reaches Milestone of 20,000 Circuit Packs Shipped, Introduces Two New Models

December 1, 2004

SAN JOSE, Calif., Dec. 1 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — JDS Uniphase Corporation today announced that it has shipped over 20,000 optical communications circuit packs and subsystems, and introduced two new off-the-shelf subsystems: the EDFA and the industry’s first Wavelength Blocker subsystems. The high degree of integration, functionality, and support for standard management interfaces helps system manufacturers accelerate their time-to-market while saving internal resources as they focus on designing more complex multi-service optical systems.

“We appreciate our customers’ repeated confidence in our ability to design and manufacture complex optical subsystem products,” said Thomas Znotins, senior vice president of JDS Uniphase’s Subsystem Products Group. “Many customers are now relying on our broad optical, software, and network management experience to provide them with innovative, off-the-shelf optical subsystems.”

JDS Uniphase designs and manufacturers highly integrated, intelligent optical subsystems that can be either rack mounted or integrated into an optical communication system chassis. JDS Uniphase’s family of optical subsystems covers a wide range of applications and includes standard SNMP interfaces and full NEBS compliance.

Until recently, system manufacturers purchased discrete optical components and modules, performing the design and manufacture themselves. Outsourcing the optical layer of their systems allows them to redeploy resources to concentrate on developing more intelligent systems that further differentiate their products. JDS Uniphase, with the broadest optical portfolio in the industry and a dedicated subsystems product group, has unique capabilities to optimize subsystem design and manufacture.

The new EDFA (erbium doped fiber amplifier) Subsystem is a fully managed, full-featured amplifier for DWDM (dense wavelength division multiplexing) systems. It offers high performance for metro, regional and long haul applications. The EDFA Subsystem is currently in service.

The Wavelength Blocker Subsystem features the industry-leading technology and design of JDS Uniphase’s Wavelength Blocker. It is used to enable ROADMs (reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexers) and is available in 50 GHz, 128 channels for C-band.

For the EDFA and Wavelength Blocker subsystems, JDS Uniphase is the original design manufacturer (ODM), responsible for both design and manufacturing. In contrast, for build-to-print (BTP) subsystems, the system manufacturer takes most of the responsibility for the design and outsources only the manufacturing. ODM subsystems, such as the new EDFA and Wavelength Blocker subsystems are among the fastest growing product areas for JDS Uniphase.
