Juniper Networks Teams With Lockheed Martin on IPv6 Transition Pilot Program
Posted on: Monday, 24 September 2007, 09:00 CDT
Juniper Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ:JNPR), the leader in high-performance networking, today announced the company will team with Lockheed Martin Corporation (NYSE:LMT) in the development of a pilot Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) transition test bed designed to simulate a government agency transition. Lockheed Martin will transition a portion of its global network to IPv6 for use during the simulation. To support this transition, Juniper Networks will contribute its high-performance IPv6-capable routers to the test bed for the simulation.
"The Lockheed Martin IPv6 transition test bed represents an excellent example of industry partners coming together to assist government agencies during the transition to IPv6," said Haywood Talcove, vice president, Public Sector Americas, Juniper Networks. "The wealth of knowledge generated by this type of industry collaboration has the potential to greatly benefit government agencies as they continue the transition to IPv6."
In conjunction with key industry partners, Lockheed Martin's IPv6 Center of Excellence will lead the transition project, upgrading a portion of its own global network that spans laboratories in 10 different cities, from California to the United Kingdom.
In 2005, the Office of Management and Budget issued a mandate requiring that all federal government agencies upgrade from the current Internet Protocol version 4 to IPv6. IPv6 is the next-generation Internet protocol, which provides an exponential increase in the number of addresses available to networked devices, solves many technical problems and provides new features and capabilities critical to the successful implementation of the next generation Internet. For the U.S. military specifically, IPv6 will enable global net-centric operations that will translate an information advantage into a decisive edge for the warfighter.
