Research and Markets: Consumer Electronics Ownership Among U.S. Broadband Households

Posted on: Tuesday, 25 September 2007, 09:00 CDT

Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/reports/c69421) has announced the addition of Consumer Electronics Ownership Among U.S. Broadband Households to their offering.

According to the Consumer Electronics Association, the average US household now owns about 26 different types of consumer electronic products. Our love affair with CE products is entrenched, an important part of how we live both our personal and business lives.

But while most broadband households have a desktop PC connected to a home network, connected home entertainment devices lag greatly. Is consumer interest low, or is another culprit to blame?

The concept of a connected home and the reality is narrowing, but when will embedded technology be mainstream? And how will the devices that lack it be viewed?

Using data compiled from studies of 2,000 households run in both May and October of 2006, and comparing it to studies conducted in 2004, this report uses "data trending" to examine the consumer electronic ownership found in broadband households and provides consumer penetration rates for each device.

Three Key Findings:

1. Many CE penetration rates are actually DECLINING among broadband homes. This signifies the adoption by more and more mainstream consumers versus the early adopters of previous years.

2. HDTV penetration has risen, yet multiple HDTV households remain limited. Networking vendors continue to hype solutions that support multiple streams of HDTV, though multiple HDTV ownership will rely on traditional TV replacement, not a need to own more than one HDTV.

3. Not surprisingly, most broadband households own at least one PC. As with TVs and DVD players, when new desktop PC models arrive to market with compelling, unique features and capabilities, replacement purchases drive other PCs into different rooms of the home.
