LightPointe Points the Way to Wider Power Over Ethernet Deployment; PowerDsine Cost-Effective Midspan Will Power LightPointe's Optical Wireless Products

Posted on: Wednesday, 8 December 2004, 09:00 CST

LightPointe, a designer and manufacturer of optical wireless products based on free-space optics (FSO) technology, and PowerDsine Ltd. (NASDAQ:PDSN), a leader in Power over Ethernet technology, announced that LightPointe will deploy PowerDsine's Power over Ethernet midspans for LightPointe's FlightLite 100 optical networking solution.

Using PoE technology solutions, enterprises, systems integrators and service provider customers can deploy LightPointe's high-speed, high-bandwidth optical wireless solutions in hard-to-reach locations such as rooftops, where it may be impractical to introduce electrical wiring, which can be a costly endeavour.

By providing PoE support in its FlightLite 100 optical transceivers, LightPointe customers benefit from rapid optical wireless deployment, remote control of the powered units and increased reliability when used in conjunction with central backup from a single UPS.

"To ensure that new networking products are easy to deploy, it is essential to get the power aspect right. Powering a laser beam that is placed on a rooftop is not straightforward. The FlightLite 100 units are open to the elements and have to be positioned where they can transmit most effectively," said Reiner Mim, product marketing director at LightPointe. "However, this means that it may not be so easy to access and maintain them. PoE midspans gave us the flexibility to install and position the FlightLite 100 transmitters and receivers where they were most effective, without needing to run electrical cabling to the devices."

"LightPointe's deployment demonstrates that companies can employ PoE midspan technology as a means to delivering innovative solutions and gaining increased features on their network, without going to the expense of replacing their switches," said Igal Rotem, CEO of PowerDsine. "The use of PoE together with optical wireless access points demonstrates the wider adoption of PoE technology for new types of emerging end-devices."

About Power over Ethernet

PoE is a technology for wired Ethernet, the most widely installed local area network technology in use today. PoE allows the electrical power necessary for the operation of each end-device, to be carried by data cables rather than by separate power cords. It minimises the number of wires that must be used in order to install the network, resulting in lower cost, less downtime, easier maintenance and greater installation flexibility.
