SUNNYVALE, Calif., Oct. 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Blue Coat Systems, Inc. , a leader in WAN Application Delivery and Secure Web Gateway, today announced that ITT, has deployed Blue Coat(R) ProxySG(R) appliances to manage Web security and policy control capabilities at the company’s gateway connection points to the Internet. The appliances also provide streaming on-demand training video across its Wide Area Network (WAN) between its headquarters and regional data centers and can optimize the delivery of other content and applications across the WAN. The next step for ITT will be to deploy ProxySG appliances to larger branch offices.

ITT uses on-demand video to train its staff of 60,000 employees spread across 350 offices around the world. To insure the timeliness and currency of the video content, ITT depends on its WAN to deliver video-on-demand to employees in branch offices. Blue Coat ProxySG appliances can deliver video to remote locations during off hours and save it for future viewing. It can also “cache” or save video requested from the headquarters’ location by a user in a branch office and store it locally for use by subsequent viewers. Should ITT conduct live video broadcasts at some point in the future, the ProxySG appliances can take a single stream of video and then split it locally into enough streams required to serve all local viewers. The appliances can also “record” live video for future playback.

“Delivering video for training and information over our corporate WAN is crucial to educating and empowering our employees,” said Kjell Ehrstrom, global network manager, ITT. “Blue Coat ProxySG appliances enable us to use our existing network for video distribution while at the same time providing security, policy control and optimization of other content and applications.”

The same Blue Coat ProxySG appliances used for video delivery and WAN optimization also help protect ITT data, users and applications from direct contact from the Internet and prevent the introduction of viruses, spyware and other malware while providing granular control over the use of streaming media, peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing, instant messaging (IM) and general Web surfing. In addition, Blue Coat ProxySG appliances integrate with ITT user authentication system, Active Directory, to provide policy-based group and user level control and prioritization. The ability to identify individual users also enables the company to track which employees have watched required videos.

ITT has deployed Blue Coat ProxySG appliances in Sundbyberg, Sweden, plus five regional network centers in Fort Wayne, Indiana; Seneca Falls, New York; Stockholm, Sweden; Shanghai, China; and Sydney, Australia. The appliances can deliver video to these data centers, while also protecting and controlling each center’s Internet gateway. All branch office Internet traffic is routed through these data centers.

“Blue Coat ProxySG appliances combine the ability to accelerate business-critical applications, including video, across the WAN or Internet gateway with the ability to secure and control content and applications,” said Craig Stewart, vice president, EMEA, Blue Coat Systems. “We are pleased to help a global leader such as ITT optimize its network to ensure efficient, high-quality delivery of business video and content to all of its locations while also protecting and managing its resources.”
