Comcast is leasing 19,000 miles of fiber optic cable from a Colorado entity to make a national fiber-optic network for television, data and phone service.
The largest U.S. cable operator said the initial cost of the 20-year deal with Level 3 Communications will be $100 million, the Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday. The 19,000-mile network will link 95 percent of the company's cable systems, which serve more than 21 million subscribers in 35 states.
The Philadelphia company said the network will boost its ability to deliver video on demand, high-speed Internet access and advanced telephone offerings.
The deal represents another step in Comcast's transformation from a cable company to a business that provides a wide range of phone, high-speed data and television services, the newspaper said.
