Vandals cut optical fiber cable in Nigeria
LAGOS, Dec. 8 (Xinhua) — Nigeria’s national telecommunication carrier NITEL said Wednesday that an optical fiber cable linking the company to the outside world had been severed by vandals.
This is the third time in two months that the optical fiber cable linking the company’s headquarters to an exchange called Wuse was cut by unknown persons, the official News Agency of Nigeria quoted a statement from the Nigerian Telecommunications Ltd. (NITEL) as saying.
“The vandals this time did not remove the cable but simply cut it and disappeared,” the statement said, adding that the deed occurred Tuesday afternoon.
Mending of the cable is underway and the link could be restored before the end of the day, said Tayo Ekundayo, a spokesman with the NITEL, in the statement.
Cost of fixing the cable was yet to be determined, Ekundayo said.
