Spanish scientists from the Universities of Granada and Murcia have created a computerized device that improves the vision of sight-impaired people.

The device — known as a reconfigurable electric-optical system for low vision — is said to be especially useful for pathologies that can lead to blindness, such as macular degeneration, cataracts and retinitis pigmentosa.

The researchers said their technology is the first visual aid unit that’s useful in all circumstances, independently of the degree of impairment of the patient. It includes three different image processing computer programs: edge enhancement, various types of digital zoom lens and an augmented view scheme system.

The scientists said the main advantage of their device is that it’s easily reconfigured and includes light low-cost cameras, real time image processing and transparent portable viewfinders.

The research has appeared in the journals Lecture Notes in Computer Science and the International Congress Series.
