Greenway Medical Technologies Executive Testifies Before Congress
CARROLLTON, Ga., Oct. 17 /PRNewswire/ — Greenway Medical Technologies Inc. further established itself as a leader in the healthcare information technology (HIT) industry with its latest testimony before the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Science and Technology. The Committee is responsible for overseeing research and development programs for several federal agencies including the Department of Energy, Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Homeland Security and the National Institute of Standards and Technology.
The testimony, presented by Greenway’s vice president of marketing and governmental affairs, Justin Barnes, focused on the progress of HIT adoption as well as the investments in technology and standards development necessary to create a national system of secure, interoperable healthcare information technology. This testimony marks the seventh time Greenway has testified or spoken on a panel before Congress in the last two years.
Greenway(R), a proven industry leader in providing integrated Electronic Health Records (EHR), practice management and interoperability solutions, has continued to be an instrumental advocate of EHR adoption through its consistent involvement in governmental policy and procedure.
With this latest trip to Capitol Hill, Barnes led the following events: * HIT Environmental Scan Briefing before the U.S. House Ways & Means Committee providing key Congressional staff with an update on the progress of HIT adoption during the last two years. This Briefing provided guidance for the House Ways & Means Committee as they contemplate introducing an HIT bill in the 2nd session of the 110th Congress (9/24/07). * HIT industry’s first Presidential HIT Panel at the National Press Club in DC for all Health Policy Advisors of Presidential candidates. Campaigns represented on this panel included Governor Mitt Romney, Senator John McCain, Senator Hillary Clinton, Senator Barack Obama and Senator Christopher Dodd. This panel discussion helped emphasize the importance of HIT legislation and demonstrated how leading candidates are shaping their platforms to address the growing issue (9/25/07). * Testimony before the U.S. House of Representative’s Committee on Science and Technology regarding the topic of “Meeting the Need for Interoperability and Information Security in Healthcare IT” (9/26/07).
“Greenway has worked diligently for the past few years educating Congress, the President’s administration and state legislatures on how to create HIT incentives that encourage physicians to adopt and utilize EHR technology,” said Barnes. “We are pleased to see HIT and EHR solutions such as Greenway’s PrimeSuite(R) significantly benefit the healthcare industry. The technology is proven to save lives, improve patient care and reduce healthcare costs. It is estimated that up to 100,000 lives and $160 billion can be saved annually in America through widespread implementation of interoperable HIT and EHRs.”
“The future of American health care will be greatly influenced by our uniform adoption and implementation of health information technology. We know Health IT can reduce medical errors while saving time, money, and most importantly, lives,” said Georgia Congressman Phil Gingrey M.D. “As a physician, I understand both the need for Health IT and the barriers that exist to implementing its wide-spread use. A single set of standards and certification criteria is needed to guide healthcare providers in adopting and implementing health information systems. Piece-meal standards and an absence of certification criteria will decrease interoperability and stifle the potential benefits of health information technology systems.”
