Chrome Closes In On Firefox In Global Web Usage

Google´s Chrome web browser is now within 4 percentage points of Firefox´s No. 2 position in global usage, according to Net Applications' November browser usage measurements.

Indeed, if just one in fifty Firefox users switch to Chrome, Google would be the world´s second most popular web browser, the firm said.

The data showed that Firefox dropped 0.4 percentage points to 22.1 percent of usage in November, while Chrome gained 0.7 percent to 18.2 percent. If the trend continues, Chrome would outpace Firefox in March 2012, although fluctuations make such predictions difficult.

Meanwhile, data from website analytics firm StatCounter showed that Chrome actually overtook Firefox for the first time globally on a monthly basis in November. The firm's research arm, StatCounter Global Stats, reported that Chrome took 25.69% of the worldwide market (up from 4.66% in November 2009) compared to Firefox's 25.23%.

Microsoft's Internet Explorer still maintains a strong lead globally with 40.63%.

"We can look forward to a fascinating battle between Microsoft and Google as the pace of growth of Chrome suggests that it will become a real rival to Internet Explorer globally," said StatCounter CEO Aodhan Cullen.

"Our stats measure actual browser usage, not downloads, so while Chrome has been highly effective in ensuring downloads our stats show that people are actually using it to access the web also."

In the U.S., Internet Explorer continues to perform strongly and is maintaining market share at 50.66%, up slightly from 50.24% year on year, StatCounter reported.

Firefox retains second place on 20.09%, down from 26.75%, while Chrome is up to 17.3% from 10.89% and Safari is on 10.76% from 10.71%.

In Britain, Internet Explorer also leads the market with 42.82%. Chrome is on 24.82%, having overtaken Firefox (20.56%) in July.
