Google Revamps YouTube Site With User Enhancements
The go-to site for internet videos, YouTube, has received a substantial overhaul this week with an effort being made to allow users to find videos easier than before and to compel an audience to linger on the site with linked videos containing similar content or interest.
As YouTube has grown in popularity, at last count, Google claims over 3 billion video views, its ease of use has been suffering as more and more features were added, seemingly haphazardly to the site leaving many users frustrated when searching for related content or interest.
The website has been newly organized to display three main vertical columns, replacing the scattering of video clips in horizontal rows. The left of the page is devoted to a column that can be customized to a viewer’s favorite channels and monitor videos being posted by their friends on social networks, reports Mark Hachman for PC Mag.
Viewers are also given the choice of selecting videos in specific channels or genres, such as entertainment, music, plus “popular” and “trending” videos. At the bottom, suggested channels offer content creators to follow, much like any other social network.
Clicking on any video brings the user to the familiar video page, where Google implemented a “Cosmic Panda” redesign that swaps the white background for gray, and streamlines the design.
The site now offers content creators more options when creating their channels, or collection of personal videos, “As different uploaders have different goals, we’ve created new Channel templates to meet your needs whether you produce one video a week or have thousands of videos for a fan to browse,” the site said in a blog post.
With the search giant seeking inroads into internet entertainment with Google TV, bringing more professionally-produced content and more organization to YouTube has become more important as Google attempts to seamlessly blend conventional television programming with web surfing.
YouTube’s more streamlined look might make the site more attractive to watch on large-screen TVs using Google’s product or other connections to the internet.
Google TV has struggled so far, partly because major Hollywood networks such as Fox and Disney’s ABC have blocked their content from the platform with the fear that it will undercut their advertising revenue and fees from pay-TV distributors such as Comcast and DirecTV.
