The U.S. Department of Agriculture has declared six additional E. coli serogroups — O26, O103, O45, O111, O121 and O145 — adulterants in non-intact raw beef. Raw ground beef, its components, and tenderized steaks found to contain these bacteria will be prohibited from sale to consumers. The Food Safety and Inspection Service will begin testing for the STEC “big six” and enforcing the new policy on March 5, 2012.

The new E. coli provision is the latest in a series of government measures to prevent foodborne

illness, raising the likelihood other pathogens will be targeted for stricter surveillance and enforcement actions. Silliker offers a number of services, including pre-requisite program reviews and HACCP audits, to help companies prepare for the new E. coli regulations.
