Avoiding the Bike Graveyard: New iPhone App Prevents ‘Garaging’ of Expensive Gear
Evolution Media enters the roof rack reminder product category with focus on digital, mobile solution.

The automobile roof rack has become a tool of choice for adventurous weekend warriors and road ready families with too much vacation cargo for the back on the minivan. They are a convenient way to leverage all of that space on top of a vehicle, keeping greasy bikes or extra luggage out of the trunk or cargo space of a car, SUV, or van. The gear or cargo is out of sight and out of mind. However, having gear such as an expensive bicycle, surfboard, or kayak loaded up on the roof of a vehicle and “out of mind” has often led to forgetful drivers pulling right into their home garage or other low-hanging obstacle and damaging the cargo, automobile, structure, or sometimes all three.
Denver based Evolution Media is the latest entrant into the market to solve this problem. While most of the solutions to prevent this catastrophe involve the physical placement of reminders in a garage or carport, Evolution chose to capitalize on the widespread popularity of Apple Computer´s iPhone to prevent drivers from damaging expensive equipment.
RackReminder is a location-based reminder application which runs on the iPhone´s iOS operating system. Once installed, users can enter multiple reminder addresses within the application and when leaving for a location with bikes or other gear on top of their vehicle, they notify the application of their intended destination. Upon arriving near the location, the app notifies the driver with both visual and audio alerts of the load on top of their car, SUV, or van.
“I actually developed the concept for this app because it was something that I needed: a reliable, inexpensive, and convenient way to prevent me from destroying another bike.” stated Nate Johnson, Evolution´s president and owner. “I say another because I´ve done it not once, but twice.”
After researching available products on the market which focus on this niche concern, Johnson decided that there was an entry point with a product which was inexpensive, but also didn´t require setting up any type of physical reminder. “I looked around and saw solutions that were either reliable and really expensive, or inexpensive but required adding some sort of physical reminder to your car or garage every time you leave.”
Johnson brought the concept to UK based Spudd Design, a firm specializing in mobile application development. After two months of intensive collaboration, RackReminder was developed and entered the Apple App Store on January 30th.
The company states that it is also in the process of developing an Android version of the application and that in the long run it wants the app to include alerts from its entire community of users. “The beauty of a digital solution to this problem,” said Johnson, “is that we can take all of the locations which users add to the software and make those location alerts available to every other user.”
