In order to stay competitive, today´s healthcare organizations must balance superior patient service with operational efficiencies from the moment patients arrive. In order to achieve this, Motion Computing®, a leading global provider of tablet PCs and supporting mobility solutions, and PatientWorks, a provider of innovative automated registration solutions, are fully automating the check-in process for healthcare organizations, helping increase efficiency, accuracy of information and overall patient satisfaction.

PatientWorks´ CheckinWorks software is designed to allow patients to walk themselves through the entire check-in process privately, securely and independently via Motion® Tablet PCs. Patients, with or without appointments, can check themselves in, confirm and update insurance information as well as process insurance co-pays using the magnetic stripe reader (MSR) and sign consent forms using the tablets´ digitizer pen. Patients can also be prompted to begin the medical interview process by being presented with a customized series of questions.
“Healthcare organizations spend millions of dollars automating and digitizing patient records only to discover they are still scanning and uploading paper check-in forms into the electronic charting system,” said Paul Smetana, vice president, PatientWorks. “Together with Motion, we´re able to automate and digitize the entire process, from the moment the patient walks into the facility and begins the first step in the care process. With this combined solution, we´ve seen reduced check-in wait times.”
Staff and administrators also benefit from the ability to verify patient identity with photos taken using the tablets´ integrated cameras, monitor wait times, control the patient queue and standardize frequently accessed information. By automating the check-in process, the staff spends less time shuffling through papers and more time helping patients who may need special assistance.
“By eliminating paper, you reduce the potential for error as handwriting can be misread or forms misplaced,” said Mike Stinson, Vice President of Marketing, Motion Computing. “The reduction in paper and move to automation translate to increased accuracy, time and cost savings as well as more efficient processes.”
