NCR Discusses the Impact of Product Variety on Their Business

Emcien, Inc. hosted a well-attended 3-part educational webinar series, in partnership with NCR Corporation, which explored the impact of product variety on supply chains and sales efficiency. Radhika Subramanian, CEO of Emcien, moderated the discussions, which featured Kate Laneve, Director of Sales Operations and Mike Groesch, Vice President of Sales & Operations Planning from NCR Corporation.

Higher customer expectations, an expanding product mix and shifting customer-buying trends are significant challenges being faced by companies across the globe. Meanwhile, three key trends — emerging markets, demand volatility and decreasing product life cycles — are putting even more pressure on supply chain operators. Today, successful companies all share two common elements: they offer the right product mix and enable Sales to deliver their solutions.

This webinar series was designed to present thought provoking metrics around the issue of product complexity along with real-world examples of how and why these challenges are on the C-level executives strategic roadmap. The series began by defining the current state of the industry and how product variety, when not addressed continually as a key competence, becomes a financial and operational burden on companies. The discussion continued with methods to diagnose and repair the underlying causes of variety so that a highly profitable product portfolio can be maintained. Lastly, the series wrapped up with critical concepts around empowering sales for dramatic improvements in sales efficiency and revenue.

“In an effort to serve all of our consumer preferences, our customers have developed a strong preference for unique or custom products which has resulted in an explosion of choices,” said Kate Laneve of NCR Corporation. “Customers have been conditioned to find the standard offer unacceptable. Our selling motion is therefore reactive to our customer demands.”

“It [product variety] is an overwhelming problem,” said Mike Groesch of NCR Corporation. “You have thousands of SKUs and customers have asked for all of these things so why can´t we give it to them? If we pick the wrong feature and it´s a long lead time component we just don´t have the right part for those people and that ends up being expedited freight or excess inventory,” he added.
