Sixty-two Percent of Consumers Will Find the Perfect Mother’s Day Gift for Less Than $100 This Year, According to PriceGrabber® Survey
LOS ANGELES, April 23, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — This Mother’s Day, many shoppers are sticking to a budget when finding that special gift for mom and planning to spend about the same amount of money on gifts as last year, according to PriceGrabber(®), a part of Experian. Results from PriceGrabber’s 2012 Mother’s Day Shopping survey reveal that 50 percent of consumers are planning to spend the same amount of money on Mother’s Day gifts as last year, with sixty-two percent planning to spend less than $100 on gifts. Twenty percent of consumers plan to spend between $100 and $249 on gifts, 8 percent plan to spend more than $250, and 10 percent said they don’t have a budget when shopping for Mother’s Day gifts this year. Conducted from March 26 to April 9, 2012, the survey includes responses from 4,296 U.S. online shopping consumers.
Flowers rank as top Mother’s Day gift selection
Mother’s Day is rooted firmly in tradition this year, with flowers as the top choice for gifts. When consumers were asked to select all of the types of gifts they plan to purchase for Mother’s Day, 43 percent said flowers, 22 percent indicated gift cards, and 17 percent selected clothing and accessories. Fifteen percent plan to buy jewelry, and another 15 percent are opting for an experiential gift such as going to dinner, a vacation or a show. According to the survey, only 13 percent plan to buy a tech-type gift for Mother’s Day such as a computer, a tablet or a smartphone. When those planning to give a tech gift were asked to select all of the types of tech-related presents they expect to buy, 51 percent said a tablet, 22 percent selected a smartphone, 15 percent noted a computer, and 15 percent said an e-reader.
“PriceGrabber anticipates that shoppers will seek out the perfect gift for under $100 this year and keep it traditional with flowers, gift cards and clothing,” commented Graham Jones, general manager of PriceGrabber. “Even though most shoppers plan to honor their mother with flowers this year based on our survey data, it is not surprising to see that tablet computers are the top choice among consumers planning to give a tech-type gift for the holiday. Tablet computers have become one of the top-searched items on PriceGrabber this year.”
Most consumers plan to buy Mother’s Day gifts online; free shipping entices shoppers
When consumers were asked how they plan to purchase their Mother’s Day gifts this year, 52 percent said they will buy from online stores via their computers, while 43 percent plan to buy in brick-and-mortar stores. Only 5 percent of survey respondents plan to purchase gifts from an online store via a mobile device. When consumers were asked to select all of the retailer tactics that will entice them to buy a product or a service for Mother’s Day, 53 percent said free shipping. The second most attractive retailer tactic was price cuts, with 43 percent of the vote, while 35 percent of consumers indicated coupons. Twenty-five percent of shoppers said they will not be influenced by retailer tactics.
Most shoppers will buy Mother’s Day gifts one week prior
The month of May will be a busy time for consumers purchasing Mother’s Day gifts. According to the PriceGrabber survey, 30 percent of shoppers plan to purchase Mother’s Day gifts one week prior, 27 percent said they will buy gifts two weeks prior, and 18 percent of respondents will leave gift-buying until the last minute, within 48 hours of the holiday. Thirteen percent of shoppers indicated that they will plan ahead, purchasing Mother’s Day gifts one month prior, and 12 percent expect to buy gifts three weeks prior.
Daily deal sites will profit from Mother’s Day
This Mother’s Day, consumers will search popular daily deal sites for savings on experiential gifts for mom, such as a deal for a restaurant, an entertainment event or a spa package. Twenty-nine percent of shoppers who plan to buy Mother’s Day gifts indicated that they will use a daily deal site such as Groupon(®), LivingSocial(®) or PriceGrabber’s local deals to shop for a gift.
