HOUSTON, May 7, 2012 PRNewswire-iReach/ — The 2012 Online College Professor of the Year contest recognizes forward-thinking professors who are using new technologies to enhance the learning experience, connect with distance students, and prepare students for success in their courses and after graduation. After receiving more than 2,000 votes for the top 10 final nominees on BestCollegesOnline.com, we are proud to announce that LeAnne Prenovost, an online assistant professor at Grand Canyon University, has been named the 2012 Online College Professor of the Year.
Meet the 2012 Online College Professor of the Year
With more than 25 years of nursing experience, LeAnne Prenovost has taught online classes in nursing, health care, and business for the past five years. Once an online student herself, she holds a bachelor’s degree in business management, an MBA, and a dual master’s degree in nursing and healthcare administration. Earning all of these degrees through online programs, Prenovost understands the challenges of attending college online and using the computer for learning. She strives to find the right balance when incorporating various kinds of instruction and technologies into her courses. “My goal is to use technology to the advantage of my students but to not overwhelm them,” she said. “I have many students in various levels of competency with technology and it is easy to overwhelm [them] with too much technology.”
And, as evident in the feedback provided by the students who nominated her, Prenovost is doing an exceptional job leveraging new skills to reach students through a virtual campus. She was described as an excellent professor who truly cares about her students as individuals, one who goes beyond the minimum requirements, and is passionate about nursing, her job, and student success. “LeAnne is a professor who has remained a significant influence in my career. Her course is interactive and she responds to questions with insight and care. You forget that you are participating in an online course,” one student said. “I think the test of a good online teacher is that they have the ability to connect with their students and cultivate a strong relationship within the online community.”
Prenovost described the recognition as a huge honor, though also adding that she does not work in the field of higher education for acknowledgement. “As I really became a full-time online instructor, I found that I touch more lives and do more good for people and their families by doing this work,” she explained. “I strongly believe in the value of education and the generational impact of education in helping our children, their children’s children, and our society as a whole. We touch many students in the online world who would not otherwise have had this opportunity for higher education.”
Along with being featured on the 2012 Online College Professor of the Year contest page, Prenovost will be presented with a $1,000 bonus for exemplifying the forward-thinking academic strategies that help online students succeed. A strong supporter of the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition, she intends to donate the $1,000 award she receives as the winner of the 2012 Online College Professor of the Year contest to ovarian cancer research in memory of her sister, Lisa Wilkinson.
