Founding Writers of the Future Contest judge and Grand Master of Science Fiction Robert Silverberg was on hand 25 years ago at The Writers of the Future awards ceremony held atop the World Trade Center in April 1987 to place his prediction of what life would be like in the year 2012. Silverberg was one of several highly acclaimed science fiction writers and scientists whose forecasts were recently revealed when that time capsule sealed 25 years ago was opened.
In his prediction for 2012, Silverberg wrote, “We´re coming out of a time of troubles into a time of risks and promise–as we have been doing since the beginning of history.” And in reference to the period we would be moving into, he went on to state, “I think the 21st Century will be a time of terror, surprises, miracles and glory–with the emphasis on surprises and miracles.”
Silverberg has not only been a judge for the Writers of the Future Contest since its inception over 28 years ago, he was also honored in 2003 with the L. Ron Hubbard Lifetime Achievement Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Arts.
