Comcast Provides 65 Local Students With $73,000 in College Scholarships
PORTLAND, Ore., June 1, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — The Comcast Foundation, founded in 1999 to provide charitable support to its local communities and to empower and enrich lives, will honor the 2012 Oregon and Southwest Washington recipients of its annual Leaders and Achievers® Scholarship Ceremony at the World Trade Center in Portland on Saturday, June 2 starting at 10:30 a.m.
Comcast provided 65 students from Oregon and Southwest Washington with $73,000 in college scholarships through the 2012 Leaders and Achievers Scholarship® Program, with all students winning a $1,000 scholarship and two students winning a $5,000 scholarship. Twenty-five of the winning students were also given a netbook computer to use at college.
“These students are exceptional individuals who set the bar as young leaders, and we are thrilled to support them with scholarships,” said Hank Fore, Regional Senior Vice President for Comcast – Oregon and Southwest Washington. “Comcast awards scholarships to students who demonstrate they have high academic standards, a strong commitment to serving their communities and leadership abilities. We hope the scholarships will help power their dreams for future success.”
Congressman Earl Blumenauer, who represents Oregon’s third district, will be the keynote speaker at the event. Guests were also honored to hear from Dan Ryan, CEO of All Hands Raised (formerly known as Portland Schools Foundation) and Susan Castillo, Oregon State Superintendent of Public Instruction. Following the ceremony students and their families are invited to enjoy the Portland Rose Festival CityFair, courtesy of the Portland Rose Festival Foundation.
The Comcast Leaders and Achievers® Scholarship Program provides one-time $1,000 scholarships to students who strive to achieve their potential, who are catalysts for positive change in their communities, who are involved in their schools, and who serve as models for their fellow students. This year, two of the sixty-five students will be surprised with $5,000 Comcast Founders scholarships.
The philosophy behind the program is to give young people every opportunity to be prepared for the future, to engage youth in their communities, and to demonstrate the importance of civic involvement, and the value placed on civic involvement by the business community.
The Comcast Leaders and Achievers Scholarship Program was launched nationally in 2001, and Comcast has awarded more than $17 million in scholarships to over 17,000 students in the years since its inception.
