Microsoft Shows Big Gains in North America and Worldwide Antivirus Markets
OPSWAT’s quarterly antivirus report shows the top antivirus vendors and products, leading instant messaging applications, and Windows OS usage.
San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) June 14, 2012
OPSWAT released their quarterly antivirus market share report today, with an additional section featuring instant messenger applications. The report compares the most popular antivirus vendors and products in North America and worldwide, as well as Windows operating system usage in North America and worldwide. Both of these sections also feature a comparison to the previous six-month period. The instant messaging section of the report shows the market share of IM applications worldwide.
OPSWAT, the industry leader in software management SDKs, interoperability certification and multiple-engine malware scanning solutions, analyzed more than 120,000 opt-in reports from endpoints worldwide over the past year. The reports, generated by OPSWAT´s free AppRemover tool, utilize the detection capabilities of the OESIS Framework to give insights to the applications installed on the endpoint computer.
Among the highlights of this quarter´s report is the announcement that Avast, Microsoft, and ESET were the top three antivirus vendors detected worldwide. Avast maintained its top position worldwide that it has held in OPSWAT´s previous reports. Microsoft´s solutions jumped almost two percentage points, moving from third to second place, though Avast maintains a lead of more than 4%. In North America, the top three antivirus vendors detected were Microsoft, Symantec, and AVG. Compared to data from six months ago, Microsoft jumped more than five percentage points, maintaining its first place position in the North American market.
“Free antivirus products have consistently come out on top since we began compiling these market share reports in 2010,” said Jeff Garon, Director of Marketing at OPSWAT. “More and more users are installing free products in North America and around the world.” Globally, the most widely used antivirus product in this quarter´s report was avast! Free Antivirus. This finding is consistent with OPSWAT´s reports from the past several quarters. The North American market is a different story. Microsoft Security Essentials has seen a consistent climb over the last several quarters to take on a solid lead in the latest report.
OPSWAT also reported that Windows 7 usage has surpassed XP in both North America and worldwide, while Windows Vista is far behind, at around ten percent or less in both markets. In the next quarter, Windows 7 is expected to increase its lead over XP, while Vista is expected to drop even further. Less than one percent of users had a trial version of Windows 8 installed, and this number is expected to increase greatly as the official product is released in the coming months.
In the instant messaging section of the report, OPSWAT showed the worldwide market share by application. The leader was Windows Live Messenger, with almost two thirds of the market. This is more than three times as much as its nearest competitor, Skype, which is also owned by Microsoft, followed by Yahoo! Messenger and Tencent QQ. Elisse Lockhart, who manages the OPSWAT Certification Program, commented, “The top three IM applications dominate the market, with a combined total of more than 90%. The remaining market is mostly shared by about a dozen other products.”
