Speculation is rampant over what Microsoft will unveil at its special announcement this afternoon. Most of the rumors have focused on some kind of tablet running the forthcoming Windows 8 or Windows RT.
Other guesses had focused on Microsoft’s investment in Barnes & Noble, which could lead to a tablet with a strong tie-in to the Nook ecosystem. Several sources have reported this morning, including Business Insider reporter Jay Yarow that Barnes & Noble will not be part of the event, however.
Should Microsoft launch its own tablet, it would be the highest-profile launch of a direct competitor to the iPad since the Kindle Fire.
The tablet market is expected to reach $78.7 billion this year, with Apple being the dominant player. In order to find success, Microsoft will be looking to replicate the consumer success it has had with the Xbox,
The rumor mill has also been busy about Google’s potential entry into the tablet market. While there are several tablets running Android made by manufacturers such as ASUS and Toshiba, many pundits believe that Google is working on its own device to sell directly to consumers, much like its Nexus line of phones. Google sells its Galaxy nexus unlocked on its online store, Google Play.
