On Wednesday, June 20, 2012, Facebook´s developer blog announced new Open-Graph functionality that will allow third-party mobile developers to add a “Like” button to apps that they create.
The “Like” button has been integrated into countless websites. For the first time, Facebook is allowing developers of third-party mobile apps the ability to let their users share content via the “Like” button. This means that when a user of an app “likes” something in the app, a story or notification can be created on Facebook. Previously, these actions could only be seen on the app itself.
“Facebook uses Instagram as an example of this new functionality. If a user “likes” a photo of a friend on Instagram, that friend will receive a notification on Facebook informing them about that action. Additionally, developers can now allow users to “like” a Facebook page directly from the app,” explains Sida Li, Social Media Director at fishbat.
To prevent privacy issues, Facebook requires app developers to request permission before they are allowed to publish on their users´ Facebook feeds. Furthermore, Facebook explains in its blog that “A like may only be published when a person performs a like action. For example, if someone gives a movie a five-star rating in a movie app, that warrants a rated action rather than a like action.” Facebook has provided all the necessary documentation for creating the new “like” features on its Developers website, which means that it is available for developers everywhere to implement.
