Ridejoy Partners With Jumio for Real-Time ID Verification

July 16, 2012

Collaborative consumption startup first rideshare site in the nation to implement ID verifications to further protect drivers and passengers

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) July 16, 2012

Ridejoy, the social ridesharing marketplace which connects drivers and passengers on long-distance roadtrips, today introduced a groundbreaking new safety feature in partnership with Jumio, Inc. The feature, ID verifications, is designed to reinforce trust and create a safer, more vibrant community by ensuring that users are, in fact, who they say they are. Ridejoy is now the first and only ridesharing site in the world to offer this check.

“We’re thrilled to be the first and only ridesharing site to adopt ID verifications as a safety feature for our users,” said Kalvin Wang, co-founder of Ridejoy. “Safety is the number one obstacle we hear about from people unfamiliar with rideshare. Now both drivers and passengers can have their authenticated ID on file with Ridejoy, making it safer than ever to share rides and spread joy.”

Jumio’s Netverify(tm) solution enables users to verify their IDs online for free in real time using just their webcam and web browser. The sophisticated technology identifies fake documents and clears real IDs in a quick, easy and unobtrusive manner. The software supports driver’s licenses for all 50 states in the US as well as passports in the US and Canada. Ridejoy connects users in both countries. The service also recognizes many European, Asian, Australian and African passports and driver’s licenses, allowing overseas travelers to verify themselves on Ridejoy as well.

Ridejoy has already made safety a priority with several existing safety mechanisms, including:

  •     relevant work and education history, a photo, and with Facebook integration, a list of mutual friends;
  •     a user review system, so drivers and passengers can check community feedback from previous rides;
  •     a user reference system, which allows for friends to vouch for community members
  •     a safety checklist sent to all users before their booked rides, with guidelines such as talking with the driver/passenger over the phone and telling friends/family about the travel plans
  •     optional background checks

“We understand that there may be people who love the concept of rideshare, but are still on the fence due to safety concerns,” said Wang. “These new enhancements are designed to further strengthen accountability on the site, as well as reduce uncertainty for newcomers.”
