Japanese games console giants Sony are believed to be planning the release of a new, “super-slim” variant of the popular Sony PlayStation 3 console, according to leaked documents.

iPS3news.com, the leading online news and updates site for the Sony PlayStation 3, understands that a new exhibit published on the website of the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) actually refer to a new PS3 console. It´s believed that Sony have requested that the government body inspect the new device in order to make certain it meets US guidelines with regard to wireless support.

According to iPS3news.com, the new device has been in the pipeline for quite some time; the FCC received a sample device back in March of this year.

Sony went to some lengths to ensure the secrecy of the new games console. iPS3news.com can reveal that nowhere in the FCC inspection was the PlayStation branding present, yet from the publically available documents it´s perfectly clear that Sony Computer Entertainment is the applicant, and that the product being examined is a computer entertainment system.

iPS3news.com believes that due to its model number, CECH-4001x, the “computer entertainment system” is almost certainly a new PlayStation 3.

Dan Lim, editor of iPS3news.com, explained why he believed that was the case, “We´re convinced that the device is a new variant of the PlayStation 3. The current Sony PlayStation 3 uses a CECH-3000 series model number, so adopting a CECH-4000 series model number would be a rational next step for a newer console.”

“In addition, we believe that the new console is likely to be a ℠super-slim´ PS3, bearing in mind previous comments made by Shuhei Yoshida of Sony Worldwide Studios.”

iPS3news.com points out that just last month, Mr Yoshida stated in response to questions about the possibility of a slimmer PS3 that he would “never say never.”

This wouldn´t be the first time Sony have made such a step, added iPS3news.com. Back in 2009, Sony released the PS3 Slim, which was significantly smaller than the original PS3 that was launched back in 2006.
