People who are currently engaged in smoking are several times more likely to indulge in trying electronic cigarettes than non-smokers according to a new study published in the American Journal of Public Health.
Electronic cigarettes, also known as Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS) that deliver a small dosage of nicotine into the smokers´ body. They have been earning a lot of attention in media, public health and in the fields of public policies.
A recent survey conducted by Legacy, a public health group that advocates for tobacco prevention and cessation services gives insight into the use and awareness of e cigarettes and how it is being consumed as a device that allows smokers to inhale vaporized nicotine in a fashionable manner. According to a peer-reviewed scientific article in the American Journal of Public Health, 40.2 percent of Americans have heard of e cigarettes and over 70 percent believe they are less harmful than regular cigarettes.
Also results of e cigarettes awareness, use, and harm perceptions conducted by researchers from Legacy and its Steven A. Schroeder Institute for Tobacco Research and Policy Studies from more than 6,000 adult participants shows that while overall e cigarettes use is still relatively low, awareness of e-cigarettes is high.
E cigarettes, smokeless cigarettes or vapor cigarettes as they are also called contain a cartridge that produces a small dose of nicotine from the liquid filled cartridge. The nicotine is inhaled by the smoker. The exhalation only contains water vapor and minute amount of nicotine which is dissolved into the environment. Vapor cigarettes do not contain any chemicals or carcinogens responsible for causing cancer.
Tom Pritchard from South Carolina says, “I smoked regular tobacco cigarettes for more than fifty years and I have tried quitting several times in the past. Now I am vaping and I am enjoying it and for the first time, I believe it is permanent. Moreover, I am saving lots of money also.”
