iLeagueofLegends.com, the leading news and updates on all the popular online role-playing game League of Legends, can reveal that the game is just overtaken World of Warcraft to become the most popular online game at the moment.

According to the newest available data gathered by iLeagueofLegends.com´s research arm, League of Legends has become the most popular PC game in North America and Europe, overtaking established rivals, including World of Warcraft, Minecraft, and Heroes of Newerth.

iLeagueofLegends.com newest data reveals that League of Legends has accumulated a whopping 1.3 billion hours of gameplay time over the last 12 months, almost doubling the number of hours played by its nearest rival World of Warcraft.

iLeagueofLegends.com revealed that League of Legends gamers clocked total of 1,292,502,456 hours in the 12 month period from July 2011 to June 30, 2012.

This puts the game in the lead by some distance from second place which clocked just 622,378,909 hours of gameplay in North America and Europe. Minecraft proved to be the third most popular online game, clocking some 371,635,651 hours of gameplay over the last 12 months.

Dan Lim, editor of iLeagueofLegends.com, said that the somewhat surprising figures meant that League of Legends had to be considered as one of the best ever MMORPG games ever made for the PC:

“We´re quite surprised by its success over the last 12 months. Of course, we didn’t doubt the games potential, nor its popularity, but who would have predicted that it would dominate the legendary World of Warcraft by such a huge distance? Truly, gamers have voted with their feet, and now it’s fair to say that league of Legends should be considered one of the true greats of PC gaming world.”

“What’s more exciting, is how rivals will respond to this -we don’t expect games like World of Warcraft and Minecraft to just sit there and do nothing, so these games will surely see some exciting new developments in the next few weeks and months.”

iLeagueofLegends.com warned that League of Legends could also face a threat from the newly released titles Diablo III, which had clocked up an impressive 172,907,605 hours of gameplay in just three months since its release.
