In a likely attempt to beat Apple to the punch, Samsung has confirmed to Reuters that they plan to announce their new, Galaxy Note 2 in Berlin on August 29th, just days before the IFA show in Germany.
“We plan to unveil the next Galaxy Note at the Samsung Mobile Unpacked event in Berlin on August 29,” said a Samsung spokesperson to Reuters on Friday.
Though Apple has yet to officially announce a new iPhone or even a press event for their new iPhone, the rumors have generally been that they’ll do so on September 12th, with a release date within 10 days of the event.
Samsung told Reuters they would announce the new device at their Samsung Mobile Unpacked event.
In an interesting move, a second Samsung spokesperson later reached out to All Things D, saying that while they would hold their “Unpacked” meeting in Berlin on August 29th, they aren’t yet saying what will be announced.
“We can confirm the unpacked event will take place on August 29th, but we cannot disclose information on what will be unveiled,” said the second spokesperson, speaking to All Things D.
The Galaxy Note 2 has been rumored and expected for a while now. Last month, Samsung Electronics America sent out a mysterious invite to some members of the press, saying they’d be unveiling their newest Galaxy device on August 15th.
Many of the press began to wonder if they would announce the new Note 2, or a new Note 10.1, the latest 10-inch Samsung tablet.
Samsung’s tablets, as you may remember, are currently embroiled in some thick legal matters with Apple.
The Galaxy Note is a huge device, packing a 5.3-inch display. With the capabilities of a smartphone yet a screen size nearing a tablet, the Note has often been dubbed as a “phablet.”
Samsung began their push of the device in America during this year’s Super Bowl with a wild commercial full of parades, clowns and cheerleaders, all very excited to be using such a monstrous device.
According to some media reports, the new Galaxy Note 2 will feature an even larger display at 5.5-inches .The display is also said to be “unbreakable,” as it’s presumably made out of Gorilla Glass. The new Note 2 is also expected to feature Samsung’s new flagship processor, the Quad 4 Exynos chip. These quad-core processors are currently found in the international version of the new Samsung Galaxy S III.
In other Galaxy Note news, T-Mobile recently announced they’d be offering the phablet to their customers, beginning August 8th. After a 2-year service agreement and $50 mail-in rebate, the T-Mobile Note will be available for $249.99. T-Mobile’s Note will also ship with Android’s latest creamery confection, Ice Cream Sandwich, or Android 4.0.
The legal battles between Apple and Samsung continue today in a San Jose court.
With anticipation for a new iPhone at an all-time high, will an early announcement of a massive, middling device work to cut into sales of Apple’s iPhone?
