There is an emphatic enthusiasm amongst retailers to dip their fingers into the business of electronic cigarette due to its frenzy popularity amongst smokers. Such enthusiasm is quite evident as retailing in electronic cigarettes offer both healthy margins and significantly more flexible contracts. Retailers dealing in traditional cigarettes can only afford limited manufacturing contracts and margin pressure.
Bonnie Herzog, New York City-based managing director of beverage, tobacco and consumer research for Wells Fargo Securities LLC, while giving a reflection in a research note said, “Use of e cigarettes could overtake consumption of traditional tobacco cigarettes within 10 years. While difficult to predict, we think it is possible that consumption of electric cigarettes could outpace traditional cigarettes over the next decade, especially given the rapid pace of innovation and consumers' demand for reduced harm products."
The major challenge faced by retailers is the development of emulating the smoking sensation of a real tobacco cigarette in the upcoming smokeless cigarettes. Herzog after a meeting with the management of Scottsdale and NJOY, an Arizona based Vapor Cigarette Company showed her confidence towards the issue being taken care of with the technological advancement. In her report, Herzog said, "As e cigs continue to evolve and offer an experience that is increasingly similar to smoking a traditional cigarette, we think consumer acceptance and conversion will accelerate."
“We don’t see smokeless cigarettes as being a niche product,” said David O’Reilly, British American Tobacco (BAT) group scientific director. “This will be a major focus going forward – giving cigarette smokers a healthier alternative encouraging them to quit smoking whilst not compromising on the taste and the sensory pleasure of smoking.”
On a similar note, Peter Nixon, vice president of communications at Philip Morris International (PMI) was reported saying, “It will be one of the big discussion points in the industry in coming few years. We think electronic cigarettes can be a significant revenue segment in the future as an alternative to cigarettes.”
