Magellan Switch GPS Watch Offers First User Changeable Batteries

August 17, 2012

The Magellan Switch GPS watch series offers the first ever user changeable lithium-ion batteries according to the Heart Rate Watch Company. This means that users can change batteries on the fly, dramatically extending the watches run time in GPS mode.

Magellan GPS watches the Switch and Switch Up offer the first-ever user changeable lithium-ion rechargeable batteries, which is big news according to the Heart Rate Watch Company.

“GPS watches have always required you to send the watch back to the manufacturer to get the batteries replaced and when the watch runs out of battery, which is 7 to 17 hours of run time, then in most all cases you had to wait for the battery to recharge”, says Rusty Squire, President of the Heart Rate Watch Company. He adds, “Magellan Switch has changed all that with user changeable lithium-ion batteries that will extend battery life for 16 hours and can be changed on the fly by the user”.

What this means is that ultra-marathon and multiple day outings are now possible with a GPS watch, which has traditionally been an area of weakness with such devices. “Solar chargers are painfully slow, USB charging sticks offer some promise but it still takes time – much more time than it takes to change out a small lithium-ion battery”, says Squire. Somehow this very valuable aspect got lost upon many initial reviews but this is the biggest point of difference for Magellan Switch Up and Switch GPS watches.

“Garmin, Timex, and Suunto do not offer user changeable batteries and with Polar’s watches you have the option to purchase an additional G5 GPS sensor with the RCX5, RCX3 and PRS800CX

but those are not integrated GPS watches like the new Polar RC3 and that does not have user changeable batteries”, says Squire. He adds, “For integrated GPS watches, with the batteries

built-in to the watch, Magellan offers the first change it on the fly solution”.

This is going to force all the other manufacturers to re-think their battery strategies going forward to address users that have longer term use needs that outlive the life of the battery. “A simple $39 battery that weighs about 1.5 ounces and is easy to carry solves all your needs for continuous power”, says Squire. He adds, “At that price and weight it is quite easy to carry multiple spare batteries for longer outings”.

The Magellan Switch Up and Switch watches are now available at the Heart Rate Watch Company, along with spare replacement batteries.
