September 6th, Likewise Skincare, producer of facial moisturizer for dry skin, offers response to an article published for the Food Consumer regarding how UV rays may result in skin cancer and mutation.

According to the article, ultraviolet rays from sunlight can influence skin mutation and skin cancers like melanoma. As reported on The Food Consumer, Farrukh Afaq and Santosh K. Katiyar of the University of Alabama explain that “Solar UV radiation induces skin cancers by causing depletion of antioxidant defense system, inflammation, DNA damage, oxidation of lipids and proteins, disturbances in apoptotic machinery, deregulation of signaling pathways, mutation and, immunosuppression.”

In addition, the Food Consumer states that Vitamin D experts claim that completely avoiding sunshine as a means to evade UV rays may lead to a vitamin D deficiency, which can result in various types of cancers. Lisa Shariat, a representative for Likewise Skincare, comments, “No one is expected to completely avoid sunlight in order to keep skin at its healthiest. Our skin simply needs protection against the sun´s UV rays, which can be tremendously damaging. People can certainly enjoy the sunshine but it´s important to use an SPF moisturizer and wear protective clothing like sunglasses and hats.”

According to the article, although a vitamin D deficiency can lead to cancers that are more threatening than skin cancer, “Usually exposure of the hands and face to the sun for 15 to 20 minutes at the hottest hours of the day should make a person enough vitamin D. Overexposure is not necessary, and can increase risk of skin cancer.”

Likewise Skincare was founded by board certified dermatologist and President of Likewise, Inc., Dr. Julie Pena. Likewise daily moisturizers are all-in-one but not one-fits-all. Each moisturizer is formulated with skin-balancing toners to work with your specific skin type.
