Oce Showcases Game-Changing Project Velocity at SGIA Expo 2012

October 18, 2012

LAS VEGAS, Oct. 18, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — Oce, a Canon Group Company and an international leader in digital document management and delivery, today announced that it will showcase the North American debut of its first fully integrated and automated large format printing system based on Memjet technology at the SGIA Expo 2012. Project Velocity is a product concept that combines Oce’s leading expertise in productive printing and workflow for large format environments with Memjet’s high-speed digital color printing technology. The SGIA Expo 2012 will convene in Las Vegas, NV, October 18-20.

Project Velocity is a revolutionary high speed production system for both color and monochrome applications including:

  • Disposable Point of Sale Posters
  • Event Graphics
  • General Indoor Poster Applications
  • CAD (Technical)
  • GIS (Mapping)

The result of more than three years of joint engineering and product development between Oce and Memjet, Velocity offers game-changing digital technology that prints up to 15 times faster than conventional aqueous inkjet systems – speeds never believed possible for large format applications.

Professional print providers can use this technology to enter new markets, expand their services and help generate new revenues by producing high volumes of posters, maps and architectural plans with unmatched productivity compared to conventional inkjet solutions. To keep up with the demand for fresh, last-minute information, retail posters can now be printed with variable content much faster and more productively than with inkjet systems.

Breakthrough Productivity for Large Format, Digital Color Printing

Velocity combines Oce’s expertise in productive printing and workflow for large format environments with Memjet’s high-speed, digital color printing technology. Key features of Velocity include:

  • Print up to 500 3′x4′ prints per hour stacked and cut to size;
  • Six integrated media rolls up to 42″ wide – 13,650 square feet of online capacity;
  • Dual tray integrated capacity stacker

Imagine printing 100 36″x48″ (E-size) posters in just 12 minutes on Velocity – versus 3 hours on a traditional inkjet system. Or printing 250 E-size posters on Velocity in the 20-30 minutes it takes to set up an offset run, with the added benefit of variable content. Now, print providers have a powerful digital option for large format, high volume color printing that can help them enter new markets, expand their services and generate new revenues.

Oce’s Award-Winning Productivity and Workflow Capabilities Combined with Memjet’s High-Speed, Color Printing Technology

“Velocity is the result of our collaborative approach to innovation. The market has long waited for a productive color solution for the high volume segment,” said Erik van Eldik, Vice President Wide Format Printing Systems at Oce-Technologies B.V. “We selected Memjet as a technology partner because of the value that their impressive technology adds to the highly regarded productivity and reliability of our wide format systems. We focused on complementing our innovation assets and know-how with Memjet technology to create a product that the market was demanding as quickly as possible.”

Velocity uses the highly accurate, six-roll media input technology from the successful Oce ColorWave® 650 printer. The media input automatically switches between different rolls and media widths, providing a total capacity of 13,650 square feet feet. The Oce Double Decker Pro stacker, currently available on the Oce PlotWave® 900 printer, is used to deliver the highest possible productivity. It has a dual tray system which allows unloading and printing to occur at the same time, which effectively allows the system to print 13,650 square feet of output without interruption. The Velocity concept features an intuitive touch screen control panel from the Oce VarioPrint® 6000 series printer. It uses the Oce PowerM® controller, color image processing and workflow components of the Oce ColorWave 650 family to further enhance and accelerate production. This concept also supports a true Adobe® PDF workflow.

Memjet delivers an entirely new category of technology that makes possible high-quality color printing at never-before seen speeds and affordability. Memjet does this by putting more than 70,000 ink nozzles on a single printhead – 17 times the density of traditional inkjet printheads. Memjet’s printhead is 8.77 inches wide. The design allows Memjet-powered printers to deliver more than 700 million drops of ink per second on a page. Memjet wide format technology combines five Memjet printheads to operate as one, firing more than 3 billion drops of ink per second.

Tim Greene of InfoTrends commented, “Velocity takes advantage of Oce’s strengths such as paper handling for production environments, production workflow in the technical market and controller technology, and wraps them around Memjet’s revolutionary technology and components. A partnership of this magnitude is very important to the global wide format market. It is set to change the competitive landscape overnight and how super-fast wide format print can — and will — be leveraged by printers and their customers.”
