Instagram Announces New Profile Web Pages

Mobile photo-sharing app Instagram is adding new web integration features in response to users´ request, the company said on Monday.
The new “Instagram profiles” on the Web will be added over the next few days, Instagram said.
“You´ve asked for Instagram on the Web and we´ve listened,” the company said in a blog posting announcing the new feature.
The new Web profile includes a selection of recently shared photographs just above a user´s profile photo and bio, providing others with a glimpse of the photos shared on Instagram.
Users can also follow others, comment and like photos as well as edit their profile easily and directly from the web, said Instagram, which is owned by Facebook.
Previously, users' profiles existed only on Instagram's mobile apps accessed on iPhone or Android devices.
The new Web profiles layout resembles that of Facebook´s timelines, but with less text and no advertisements. Users will have a large cover image that displays a collection of their old Instagram photos. Their profile photo will be shown on the right side of the screen and their snapshots will flow down the page.
Menlo Park, CA-based Facebook agreed to acquire Instagram in April in a deal valued at $1 billion. But due to Facebook's declining stock price the deal was ultimately valued at $715.3 million when it closed in August.
From the beginning, Facebook has insisted it would keep Instagram running as a separate service -- a pledge it appears to be keeping. Instagram´s new Web pages do not link to Facebook, or require users to log in using their Facebook accounts.
Instagram's privacy settings also differ from those of Facebook. The photo-sharing app allows users to choose to be either public, meaning anyone can view and comment on their pictures, or private, which would allow only pre-approved followers to view their photos.
Instagram said it would begin rolling out the new Web profiles over the course of this week.
“If you don´t see your profile yet, be assured that you´ll see it in the next few days,” Instagram said.
Users can view their profiles, or those of their friends, by navigating to instagram.com/[username].
