Bacchus Selections Offers Daily Wine Deals the Old Fashioned Way

SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 5, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — A new wine deal site is changing the rules by doing things the old fashioned way. Bacchus Selections is an online wine retailer that has adopted the business model of a small corner wine shop.

In beta testing for over a year, Bacchus Selections is now opening its doors to the public. As of December, the company is offering a highly curated selection from France, Spain, and Italy. Despite the limited availability of their wines, Bacchus Selections offers discount pricing. Like other “Wine Deal” websites, Bacchus sells wines at twenty to fifty percent below retail. This includes highly rated wines from both France and Italy. Even better, Bacchus Selections offers inexpensive shipping: a flat fee of $6.99 for any sized order.

For the people at Bacchus Selection, the personal touch is the most important part of the business. “Being a huge online retailer never appealed to me,” says co-owner Kathleen Pileggi. “We wanted to be able to sell wines we care about. We wanted customers who are as passionate as we are. It’s great to be able to achieve this dream.”

A spate of online wine deal companies has surfaced over the past few years, including WTSO and Lot18. Until Bacchus Selections, however, they all focused on acquiring entire warehouses of inventory at steep discounts.

“What most folks don’t know is -and this is something that really surprised me at first– is that the opposite is just as true. If there are only a few cases of a wine available, a savvy sommelier can purchase it at a huge discount, and pass those savings on to the customer as well. In this business you have to go really big or really little. We went little. We think it’s more fun this way.”

Bacchus Selections began as a thesis project for William Loftus, who was then a graduate student at the Wine School of Philadelphia. Loftus and fellow Wine School alumni Kathleen Pileggi joined forces soon after. They are now running the company with the assistance of several members of the Wine School senior staff.
