Organic Farmers Market Community, Colle, Responds to California Program That Trains Organic Farmers

On December 14, organic farmers market community, Colle, comments on the Agriculture and Land-Based Association program to help bring in low-income minority farmworkers into an Anglo-dominated industry.
According to [The Washington Post, since the program´s creation in 2001, the ALBA has created more than 80 small farm businesses. The program teaches farmworkers, most of whom are first generation Latino immigrants, education crop planning, production, marketing, distribution, and other skills necessary in order to create an organic farm. Students meet bi-weekly over a six-month course at ALBA´s 90-acre ranch in the Salinas Valley. Recently, the program expanded to include a three-month apprenticeship program where students grow and sell crops together.
Many of the students remark at the program´s reduced exposure to dangerous chemicals in the field as well as the lessons they learn that influence their dietary habits.
Outside of the educational aspects, the program runs a licensed wholesale distribution program called ALBA Organics in order to help new farmers with storage, marketing and distribution. Some of their customers include Google, the University of California at Santa Cruez and Trader Joe´s.
In response, organic farmers market community, Colle, commends this program. “Education is always a step in the right direction.” They continued, “Teaching people how to grow organic and healthy food is only part of it. How to store, market, and distribute these products is also essential. With luck, more programs such as the ALBA can be formed to help create more small organic farms.”
