DOCSIS media gateway applications

TORONTO, Jan. 8, 2013 /PRNewswire/ – ViXS announced it is developing a
reference design based on the Intel(R) Puma(TM) 6 platform’s
high-performance solution for DOCSIS media gateways – combining the
leading DOCSIS3.0 System on Chip (SOC) from Intel and leading network
media processing transcoder and MoCA2.0 SOCs from ViXS. The reference
solution will result in quick time-to-market for OEMs building DOCSIS
media gateways for cable MSOs worldwide.

With the rapid adoption of tablets, smart phones and other mobile
platforms, consumers are demanding anytime, anywhere entertainment,
dramatically altering the TV viewing experience, and increasing the
number of client devices within the home. This market trend has opened
up new opportunities for cable MSOs to deliver new services for
entertainment content through DOCSIS enabled broadband media gateways.
An advanced cable DOCSIS media gateway utilizes the super-fast
downstream speeds provided by DOCSIS3.0 technology, transcoding, and
seamless in-home networking technology offered by MoCA2.0.

Intel’s Puma family has long been a leader in providing advanced DOCSIS
solutions to the cable industry. Intel Puma 6MG extends Intel’s
leadership by bonding up to 24 channels to deliver downstream data
speeds of up to 1Gbps. By taking advantage of the high downstream
bandwidth offered by the Intel Puma6 family, service providers can
deliver multiple streams of IP video over DOCSIS to subscriber homes.

ViXS SOCs provide the transcoding and MoCA technologies for these DOCSIS
media gateways. Cable broadcast in North America and several markets
worldwide relies primarily on the MPEG2 codec and TS container formats,
and in many cases these streams must be converted to MPEG-4 (H.264)
codec and other codecs as well as video streaming containers such as
HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) to support a wide variety of mobile devices
such as tablets, iPADs, iPhones, Android Phones and other devices in
the home such as client set-top boxes.

“We are pleased to enable the Intel Puma 6MG platform with ViXS’
advanced network transcoding and MoCA 2.0 SOCs for its home media
DOCSIS 3.0 based solutions”, said Sally Daub, President and CEO at ViXS
Systems. “ViXS Quad HD media processing and transcoding technologies
combined with our cost effective MoCA 2.0 solutions are proving to be
an optimal complement to Intel’s DOCSIS 3.0 solutions to add true
differentiation in this exciting new market”.

“Intel’s Puma6MG DOCSIS 3.0 SOC has led the way with Gigabit downstream
speeds for a cable modem SOC that combines video gateway and content
security capabilities”, said Ran Senderovitz, General Manager at Intel.
“We are pleased to work with ViXS enabling them to demonstrate their
leadership in transcoding and invocation of MoCA 2.0 solution in
combination with Intel Puma 6MG. This provides OEMs that are using
Intel Puma 6MG a compelling video gateway solution for operators that
will excite customers”
