Audi unveiled its 2013 A3, complete with 4G LTE wireless connectivity here at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

The new vehicle by Audi has wireless connectivity powered by the second generation Gobi chipset, which is made by Qualcomm Technologies.

The “Audi connect” services in the A3 are now giving users the ability to hit broadband wireless speeds of up to 100 megabits per second.

Qualcomm’s Gobi chipset inside the Audi will help enhance features like in-car Wi-Fi hotspot, Internet radio, Web services and an augmented navigation system that presents street level visual imagery streamed directly to the vehicles.

“Audi was the first automaker to highlight the potential for LTE connectivity in vehicles at CES 2012 and now becomes the first automaker to announce a commercial model with embedded 4G LTE connectivity,” Ricky Hudi, chief executive engineer of electrics/electronics, Audi AG, said in statement. “As a highlight, we will soon be offering a fully integrated LTE link for our Audi connect services in the new Audi A3 in 2013.”

The Gobi MDM9215 chipset is designed to enable enhancements to real-time navigation, weather and travel information while providing ultra-fast Wi-Fi hotspot access for up to eight devices in the car.

Qualcomm said it hopes to bring 4G LTE connectivity to other automobiles the same way it was able to do so in the smartphone and mobile computing industry.

“The capabilities of the MDM9215 chipset allows Audi to define a new in-car media experience, including viewing and interacting with content on the head unit as well as on passengers´ own Wi-Fi-connected smartphones and tablets, all at 4G LTE speeds,” Kanwalinder Singh, senior vice president of business development, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc, said in a statement.

The new technology implemented into the Audi is just one of a few things being announced by the automaker during CES. Audi is also expected to show off some driverless car features at the event, such as a vehicle that is able to find a parking spot, and park itself.
