It’s Sweets for the Sweet Talkers at Angie’s List: Tootsie Rolls Now the Treat of Choice for Referring Members

Some corporate leaders turn to exercise to deal with the inescapable stress the business world offers. Others might turn to extreme sports or indulge in a creative hobby.
Angie Hicks, founder of Angie´s List, has been known to turn to Tootsie Rolls. And when she recently became acquainted with Tootsie Roll Industries President Ellen Gordon, Hicks decided that two national company female executives should have a closer relationship.
Starting in February, Angie´s List will exclusively use Tootsie Roll products as the sweet treat component of its member referral reward program. Announcing the candy partnership wasn´t influenced by February being the month of love, Hicks said.
“This isn´t something we do to celebrate Valentine´s or Sweetest Day or any national holiday,” Hicks said. “At Angie´s List, we celebrate our members every day, and this is one way to show our appreciation. We´ve tried a number of rewards over the years, including cash, but candy always wins.”
In addition to a large bag of either Tootsie Rolls or Tootsie Pops (members´ choice) the referral reward will include a set of Wack-O-Wax cherry lips, a picture of Angie wearing the lips and a request for members to take a photo of themselves wearing the lips and send it back with a short description why they like Angie´s List so much they encouraged others to join.
“Seeing the Wack-O-Wax lips inspired us to bring back a monthly program we had years ago. We called it the Big Mouth Award,” Hicks said.
Angie´s List Big Mouths will be chosen monthly from among those members who send back pictures wearing the lips. Up to 100 members will be randomly chosen each month to receive $25. Two yearly winners will receive $500. Winners will be featured on the company´s Facebook page and other social media outlets, as well as select editions of the Angie´s List Magazine.
There may also be one, annual award, called the Biggest Big Mouth Award, which would be awarded based on number of referrals made and the “why I like Angie´s List” comments.
Also as part of the launch, Angie´s List employees will build a miniature home made entirely out of Tootsie Roll products, incorporating advice from highly rated construction companies. Progress will be reported via Angie´s List social media fans and followers and the Angie´s List Magazine.
