On February 8, JMR Graphics comments on an article published by JMR Graphics regarding the idea to put ads on school buses in Missouri.
According to the article published by St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Missouri has been experiencing tightened school budgets and selling ad space could be in the near future. The article said Missouri state Rep. T.J. Berry, R-Kearney, said his bill calls for legalizing ads inside and outside of school buses. He said it could boost revenue for school districts, especially in light of budget cuts and decreases in state or federal aid.
“Every single school district has had to deal with budget concerns,” Berry said in the article. “And generally speaking, the way they have had to deal with those has been cuts or tax increases.”
Representative TJ Pannell from JMR Graphics, a nationwide bus wraps manufacturer, said school districts are usually forced to cut programs to meet budget needs and using ads on buses can really boost funding. “Putting ads on school buses, which are already being used, is one way to increase funding,” Pannell said. “Many schools suffer from strict budget cuts and dwindling extracurricular programs because of a lack of money. The kids are the ones who are at a disadvantage from all of these spending cuts. Ads could really help the school districts.”
However, some organizations think advertising on school buses is unsafe. In the article, the National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation Services said that “obscuring the recognizable school-bus yellow exterior with ads and distracting other drivers present a safety problem around school buses that cannot be ignored.”
Pannell said the school districts could limit how many advertisements go on the buses and where they are placed. “If people are worried about ads being a distraction, there are ways to make the ads less ℠obstructive´ and minimalistic,” he said. “I think when people envision ads on school buses, they imagine an array of images sporadically placed around its body. However, districts could stick to bumper stickers or window wraps to maintain a less distracting exterior.”
