Microsoft has sold 76 million Xbox 360 consoles worldwide since launching the device in 2005, making it one of the company´s most successful products to date.

Yusuf Mehdi, Senior Vice President of Microsoft's Interactive Entertainment Business, revealed the figures during an onstage interview at this week´s “Dive into Media” conference in California.

The Xbox 360 is the best-selling gaming console in history, and has dominated the US market month-over-month for two straight years. The Xbox Live community has grown 15% over the past year to 46 million users, who spend an average of 87 hours per month with the online service, Microsoft said.

Last September, the company reported in financial statements that sales of Xbox 360 had surpassed 70 million units, meaning the software giant sold 6 million Xbox 360s over the holiday shopping season alone -- an impressive accomplishment considering the console is in its eighth year on the market.

Part of the Xbox 360´s success is based on Microsoft´s motion control device Kinect, which launched in 2010. The company says it has sold 24 million Kinect sensors worldwide, although the product is not sold in tandem with the gaming console.

The Xbox 360 also showed strong growth as an entertainment device, with entertainment app usage up 57 percent year-over-year. The company said users racked up 18 billion hours of entertainment on Xbox 360 consoles in 2012, and Mehdi said Microsoft is planning to rollout more than 40 new customized TV and entertainment apps on Xbox. Such focus on entertainment has led to speculation that Microsoft´s next-generation console may be more of an Xbox TV device, with advanced gaming capability.
