Private key encryption brings a whole new level of security for users who are concerned about storing their sensitive and confidential information on the cloud. It is an optional feature that allows users to assign a private key while creating a new account. This private key, provided by the user, is used for encrypting data in the account. Since the key isn’t generated by IDriveSync, being provided by users themselves, no one except the user has access to their data. These private keys are never stored on IDriveSync’s servers, so even IDriveSync employees can’t access any user data.

Private encrypted accounts mostly behave just like default encrypted accounts and can be accessed with ease on the web, desktops, and mobile devices.
Sharing using Private Key Encryption
Since user’s data is stored in an encrypted format with a key known only to them, they cannot share their data as is. However, by allowing IDriveSync to store an encrypted version of their private key (with explicit permission), seamless sharing of files and folders can be enabled so recipients can access and view data shared with them. Users also have an option to clear the private encryption key stored in the database, after disabling all shared accede to their account data from the share management screen on IDriveSync’s website.
Difference between Private Key Encryption and Default Encryption
Default encryption uses industry standard 256-bit AES encryption to store and transfer data with an encryption key generated by IDriveSync. With default encryption data is stored in an encrypted format, but IDriveSync personnel can assist in recovering your data should the need ever arise.
With private encryption, the key required for data encryption is set by the user instead. Since IDriveSync does not have access to a user’s encryption key, account data cannot be displayed until the user enters their encryption key, which is then used for retrieval of data.
