Oscar Limelight Shines on Global Cinematography Institute program of “Expanded Cinematography”

The goal of the Global Cinematography Institute is to prepare cinematographers, postgraduate students and veteran filmmakers to take advantage of on-going advances in digital and virtual cinematography technologies.

For cinematographers, visual effects artists and to all who are involved primarily in the imaging side of the filmmaking, two award categories are the most important: Cinematography and Visual Effects. This year´s Oscar for achievements in those fields was awarded to distinguished artists who worked on the same film — “ Life of Pi”. Academy Award for the Cinematography was won by Claudio Miranda, ASC, and Bill Westenhofer, Guillaume Rocheron, Erik-Jan De Boer and Donald R. Elliott won the Oscar for Visual Effects.

This “coincidence” is not merely the continuation of the same trend for past four years when Cinematography and Visual Effects awards were given to the same picture (Life of Pi – 2012, Hugo — 2011, Inception – 2010, Avatar – 2009). It is the confirmation of the new artistic visual style that has started to prevail in the last few years. Founders of Global Cinematography Institute, Directors of Photography Vilmos Zsigmond, ASC and Yuri Neyman, ASC, see “Expanded Cinematography” as the combination of classic and virtual cinematography. Future cinematographers must be prepared to expand their leading roles in live and virtual cinematography and to become experts in those fields.

In the new session of “Expanded Cinematography” which starts April 13, 2013 classes in the curriculum include “Cinematography in Video Games and Virtual Lighting & Previsualization,” “Advanced Lighting for Feature Films,” “Foundations of Lighting and Composition,” “Independent and Music Videos Cinematography,” “Digital Cinematography and Optics,” “Virtual Cinematography,” “On-Set Image Management and Color Correction” and more. These new disciplines provide students with a unique opportunity as a filmmaker/cinematographer to prepare for the job market in the current Hollywood economic, technical and artistic climates. The Global Cinematography Studios in Los Angeles, CA features a standing-set specifically designed for the lighting classes, which will enable teachers to instruct students in the most advanced and innovative techniques.
